Northern Art Prize 2013
"The Last Gaze" - Margaret Harrison. By far the best work for The Northern Art Prize if you ask me! Particularly this piece. Backing you all the way, fingers crossed!

Actually surprisingly delicate due to being made in two halves. This was however the first attempt so at least they look like maracas!
Surrealist waves...
Kettlewaves
Ink, paper
42cm x 29.7cm
Experiment, breaking up a drawing of a kettle with a soundwave patterns. It ended up giving the image a sort of Dali, surrealist melted look, which was an unexpected outcome.
Might try taking a photo and emulating the soundwave pattern by moving the imagine in a scanner to manipulate the image. Especially as this would look perhaps more scientific, like a frequency diagram of sound.

Advice
"If you can put it in words, there's no point in there being any materials involved"
Wise words from a fellow artist struck a chord....

Vantage Prize photos
Brilliant experience exhibiting among so much amazing art, would highly recommend going to the next exhib, which I think the organisers hope to put to together around the end of this year! Logistics meant that I had to go for a footlight instead of a spotlight, BUT the overall effect remains the same I think.

REFRAIN
REFRAIN
Concrete, music stand
87cm x 35cm x 35cm
(Close up of concrete cast)
Optional info:
The word “REFRAIN” has two very different
definitions:
Within the jargon of music it is the term
used for the chorus, a repeated phrase of sound caused by the gathering of
most, if not all of the sounds involved.
Outside of music, the term is a negative
direction, where in contrast to the nature of coming together (in music), it is
in fact pushing people away.
This contradiction forms the basis of the
piece, which is mimicked in the materials used. The concrete deadens any
potential for sound that is felt in the presence of a music stand.
